Kerakoll Industrial Hub | Sassuolo

When regeneration meets industry, for the well-being of people and the environment.

Simple shapes, transparencies and urban integration define an architecture that blends with greenery and offers maximum functionality. Innovation, sustainability and increase in production potential for the Kerakoll plant in Sassuolo-Fiorano Modenese.

Sustainability is the main goal shared by the design project for the manufacturing site and the leading company in sustainable building materials production. The intervention will double the company’s production capacity through the creation of new spaces for the staff. Interventions combined with the regeneration of the existing area to improve the site quality for workers, visitors, and citizens in general

The project consists of four main points: the expansion of the existing central plant through the construction of a new production building, the creation of a multifunctional service area that will house laboratory spaces, offices, changing rooms, and a dining area for employees, the construction of a large storage warehouse, and the restructuring of the entire courtyard area and parking areas with a green focus. The project covers the expansion of the surface for productive use while aiming to improve the workers’ well-being by equipping the manufacturing complex with quality shared spaces and services.

The building’s design reflects the industrial context in which it is inserted, tailoring the project geometries in line with principles of transparency, essentiality, and integration into the urban context, with particular attention to greenery and nature, which become an integral part of the building’s Architecture itself. From the combination of simple functional needs, the building takes on a powerful architectural image and connection with the entire production system, becoming the new access point for the company staff and providing spaces aimed at implementing corporate welfare, where the focus is on people and their well-being.

The intervention will create a green lung around the new Kerakoll hub, thanks to the planting of about 140 new trees and the creation of green areas designed to integrate perfectly with the architecture of the buildings in a linear landscape typical of the Po Valley territories. Rows of strategically placed trees will create new spaces, mark paths and walks to lead the view to the plant and minimize the architectural impact typical of heavily industrialized areas.

The photovoltaic system, with its production capacity of 1.6 MW, is combined with a specific heat recovery system to serve the production of compressed air tailored to the characteristics of the plant. This system will generate a percentage of renewable energy far exceeding the requirements in current industry standards. To allow reduced energy consumption, an internal lighting system with presence sensors will be implemented throughout the production area.
