An environmentally sustainable healthcare architecture, patient-centric and surrounded by nature
The New Hospital in a panoramic position, surrounded by nature among olive groves, gardens, turns its gaze towards the sea embracing the city. A complex that stands as a landmark for Liguria and neighbouring regions. An iconic, eco-sustainable building, strongly linked to the territory, conceived to meet the challenges of the future.
Reading the site identified the orientation of the property as the starting point for the design. Proper management of the natural slope and land planning allowed the enhancement of greenery while respecting nearby wooded areas. The radial geometry of the building, open towards the valley, generates main lines facing the urban layout of the city of La Spezia, offering the rooms a privileged view towards the sea and an optimal exposure of the facades.
The goal was the creation of an architecture that dialogues with its context and enhances the surrounding landscape with simple and recognizable forms. The use of natural materials that maximize humanization, natural light, and green are valuable tools both for a rapid recovery of patients and to keep under control the stress of health professionals.
The strategic positioning of functional areas has direct and positive effects on the climatic-care organization for treatment processes. The strategy applied to pathways has been to differentiate flows by allowing dedicated areas to be reached.
Technical rooms have been distributed in the rear side to facilitate maintenance and have continuity of departments, thus ensuring flexibility and adaptability to future changes.
Energy sustainability, a strategy that combines low consumption, high efficiency in energy production and rational, conscious and differentiated use of energy sources. Energy savings, made possible by a trigeneration system to contain energy consumption and simultaneously produce electric power, hot and chilled water. A high-performance building, using renewable energy, integrating passive energy-saving systems into the design, photovoltaic modules on the roof.
