The Global Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), ratified during the UN summit in September 2015 by 193 countries, brings together the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), broken down into 169 targets. The SDGs are designed as a continuation of the Millennium Development Goals, which were defined in 2000 by the United Nations.
Politecnica wants to contribute to the achievement of 6 of these objectives, which have at their heart the well-being of the human community by designing people-friendly works:
Our designers create health and hospital facilities that are efficient and users-friendly. They are public works that serve citizens and communities, which we design to have the best possible environments for patients and which are, at the same time, functional to allow operators to carry out their work in the best possible way.
Our experience in healthcare to serve Covid emergencies
National Intensive Care Hub – Modena and Baggiovara Hospitals
Two new facilities to support Modena and Baggiovara Hospitals, with a total of 48 beds, built in compliance with the latest health standards based on safety, responsiveness and technology. We have worked with the local authorities to adapt the two existing hospital facilities not only to respond to the Covid-19 health emergency but also to increase their capacity for care in the future.
The integrated design approach, based on the use of BIM technology, was fundamental for the construction of two “additional” modular hubs, connected at strategic points to the main buildings to allow the reorganisation and optimal exchange of internal flows, in terms of accessibility, logistics, use of equipment and facilities, services and staff operations.

Redesigning healthcare buildings for today’s challenges
New “Felettino” Hospital – La Spezia
A major hospital redevelopment project with 8 floors and 506 beds, designed in the name of energy and technological innovation, according to the principles of circular design to meet the highest standards of efficiency, functional flexibility and user comfort.
The strategic redesign of the building, in public-private synergy, was modulated with an increase in the number of high- and medium-intensity care beds to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic and provide a state-of-the-art, constantly updated health service, capable of adapting to the future challenges of the health system.

Providing quality, equitable and inclusive education and learning opportunities for all.
Access to free, equitable and quality education is primarily a matter of design, which Politecnica develops, interweaving technical elements and social objectives. The design takes into account the needs of gender equality, disabilities and of the interactivity concepts of the groups of students to design stimulating, safe, educational and inclusive learning environments.
Innovative and sustainable buildings for better didactics
New Teaching Pavilion – Enzo Ferrari Engineering Campus, Modena
Since 1995 we have been responsible for many of the development and expansion phases of the “Enzo Ferrari” Engineering Campus in Modena on behalf of UNIMORE – University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Our most recent work, after winning the international design competition organized by the University, involved us in the construction of the new Teaching Pavilion.
High technology and energy-efficient environmental systems combine perfectly with functional and aesthetic requirements, in a new structure for 1200 students with a strong urban vocation. The Pavilion will transform and characterize the connective space of the Campus, creating a new access with outdoor spaces for events and a square to encourage users to meet and socialize.

Technology and modularity serving the research
Educational laboratories and Technology Centre – Verona
A new building to guarantee larger, modular, welcoming and inclusive spaces for research and teaching: this is the main target of our intervention in the “Cà Vignal” Science and Technology Hub on the University Campus of Verona, for which we have built 6 new laboratories for about 270 people, 4 new equipped classrooms and an Aula Magna for 280 people.
The intervention was carried out entirely by BIM, including the implementation of a BIM Execution Plan, discussed and shared by all project stakeholders: an advanced application tool provided to the University for the maintenance and management of future interventions on the complex buildings, in order to adapt them, through innovative and sustainable solutions, to the continuous evolution of the demands from users and scientific research.

Here, women and men design together.
One of our goals is to design public and private environments in which the principle of Gender Equality is respected and the values of social and economic inclusiveness are promoted. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but the necessary condition for a prosperous, sustainable and peaceful world. For this reason, we promote the representation of women in our decision-making and management processes and act as their spokesperson within our sector and beyond. We design together by crossing different genders’ insights for a more effective impact on society.
Support to AIW – Association for the Integration of Women
Politecnica has chosen to support AIW, a social promotion association specifically helping young migrant women in economically and socially disadvantaged conditions, for the realization of the “Roots” project.
Within the San Paolo Complex in Modena, one of Politecnica’s main restoration projects, we have made available pro-bono to the Association the design of two premises for the creation of a restaurant and a co-working space, with the aim of encouraging job placement and creating social connections, creating a reference point for the community, a place for exchange, sharing and integration.

Initiating the gender audit process
Politecnica is in the process of carrying out a gender audit in order to put in place a methodology to assess and certify gender equality according to international scientific standards. The audit is the first step that will allow the company to achieve certification of the actual level of gender equality by 2021, to optimize the potential contribution of gender equality in terms of company performance.

Intelligent energy for the balance of the planet.
In the near future, the focus will be on a new balance between energy sources: natural gas, renewables and energy efficiency. Politecnica adopts the best technologies and design solutions that assure access to more efficient energy services in this transition between the mix of sources. For us, it is a constant working method, an integrated approach, to search for design solutions providing for convenient, reliable and modern energy services. Designing for a sustainable future means thinking about the future and the next generations, considering the impact that the project will have on the surrounding environment and on people throughout its life cycle, while assessing its contribution in terms of improvement to the place.
Modern systems for maximum consumption control
Coop Reno Management Centre – Castelguelfo di Bologna
A Management Centre organized according to principles of conservation of green areas, with low environmental impact and entirely self-sustainable in terms of energy.
The installation of ultra-modern mechanical ventilation, solar, thermal and photovoltaic systems enables to optimize the control of overall energy consumption, thus combining with comfort requirements for the activities and functions housed in the buildings.
Saving electricity and heat and safeguarding other sources of natural supply are the primary drivers of the design process that must inspire a more sustainable future.

Environmentally friendly renovation
Palazzo degli Affari – Florence
This intelligent redevelopment project aims to turn the historic Palazzo into a modern conference centre and exhibition space, favouring the use of renewable resources to ensure high standards of maintenance, durability, material compatibility and replaceability of elements.
A model of aesthetic and functional renovation in the name of change to raise quality, comfort and orientation standards, favouring access to renewed, state-of-the-art energy services, while respecting the best ratio between the benefits and overall costs of construction, maintenance and management.

Infrastructure connects communities.
Investments in infrastructure and innovation are crucial drivers of a country’s development and growth, whether in the planning of mobility, data or underground networks or in the design of new production facilities. This is why we operate by integrating expertise, research and sharing with stakeholders, seeking to optimize synergies and contributing to the technological, social and environmental development of the place. Knowledge transfer between disciplines, professionals, generations and cultures is for us a working method based on reciprocity, which is particularly important in developing countries, but generally essential to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of the result.
New infrastructures to foster social connections
New Bridge over the Arno – Fibbiana
Planning a road infrastructure in harmony with the natural landscape and aware of the urban fabric where it will be inserted is a challenge that today cannot neglect the characteristic relational networks of the place.
This intervention, which connects the two banks of the Arno including the construction of a cycle/pedestrian path with a total length of 2 km, integrates into an existing slow mobility system, innovating the area without neglecting its peculiarities, social connections and community needs. The result is a new bridge capable of considerably reducing vehicle travel times and at the same time improving the enjoyment of the area.

Innovation and cooperation to implement complex and efficient projects
Lamborghini Automobili Paint Shop – Sant’Agata Bolognese
An integrated and multidisciplinary design has resulted in the Paint Shop created for the historic industrial site of Lamborghini Automobili. The new production unit combines craftsmanship and digitalization, while the technologies introduced into the production cycle are all inspired by the concept of Industry 4.0, where modularity, flexibility and utmost customization are the keywords of the new development model.
The sharing of expertise and the continuous confrontation between specialists, together with a precise study of the technological development needs of new projects are the winning components for the realization of a complex and efficient project.

The sustainability of a project is measured by its ability to integrate with the environment, the landscape, the communities and the economy of the places where it is implemented. In our working method the study phase of these places becomes essential, even before the design, in order to create not only intelligent spaces and eco-infrastructures, but also opportunities for socio-economic growth and strengthening of urban resilience.
Participatory planning for new cultural destinations
Ex Montezemolo Barracks – Cuneo
One of the most important post-war urban planning interventions for the city of Cuneo, our renovation of the 32,600 square metres of municipal property in the former Montezemolo Barracks was designed according to the criteria of participatory urban planning, with the involvement of the inhabitants and schools in the neighbourhood, to give the city back an open, green area with an important cultural vocation.
The former barracks will host a “territory hub” dedicated to the discovery of the city’s historical and tourist offer, and the area will be equipped for events. The large multi-purpose lawn will be crossed by bicycle and pedestrian paths connected to the nearby Parri Park, with no parking in the area.

Urban regeneration that supports progress
Urban regeneration of the Darsena area – Ravenna
The Dare project (Digital environment for collaborative alliances to regenerate urban ecosystems in middle-sized cities), winner of the fourth European call for proposals “Urban Innovative Actions”, aims to create a path that combines technological transition and urban regeneration, encouraging the spread of digital culture among citizens and the optimization of public administration services.
The process of digitizing the area actively involves the community in telling the story of the place and its evolution to make it attractive to residents, visitors and investors, encouraging a process of sustainable transformation, i.e. an integrated plan for social, environmental and economic regeneration and improvement.
